Designed to explore hypersonic flight and extreme altitudes, it reached speeds above Mach 6 and altitudes beyond 350,000 feet. Powered by the Reaction Motors XLR11 and later the XLR99 rocket engine, the X-15-1 became one of the most significant research aircraft in aviation history.
